The quietest way to ruin Q1 is a missed checkbox in December. As a Kentucky dealer, you need a Kentucky auto dealer insurance checklist that locks down coverage before the new year. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the exact steps I use with clients to prevent surprises and keep your lot, shop, and books tight.

I’m Adam Sheridan with Reed Brothers Insurance. We specialize in insurance for independent used car dealers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Missouri. My goal is to translate policy fine print into something that makes sense, and help you make confident decisions.

Kentucky Auto Dealer Insurance Checklist: 11 Year-End Checks

1) Confirm Garage Liability: limits, drivers, demos, operations

Garage liability is your backbone. Make sure limits match your sales volume and service exposure. Verify every active driver is listed and that demo/test-drive usage is clearly addressed.

Quick checks

  • Are your per-occurrence and aggregate limits still right?
  • Is your driver list current (removed anyone who left)?
  • Are test drives, demos, and road tests explicitly covered?

2) Tighten Dealer Blanket / Open Lot (Inventory) Coverage (KY Auto Dealer Insurance)

Your inventory is cash on asphalt. Confirm comprehensive vs. specified causes of loss, make sure collision is included, and scrutinize deductibles—especially for wind/hail. Ask if you have a per-event hail aggregate or only per-vehicle deductibles.

Quick checks

  • Is your lot insured on comprehensive?
  • What are your collision and hail deductibles?
  • Do you have a per-storm cap (aggregate)?
  • Are all titled entities/DBAs scheduled correctly?

3) Add or verify False Pretense limits

Fraud is real—walk-off test drives and title scams happen. False pretense covers vehicles you voluntarily part with due to trick or scheme. Many policies bury this as a small sub-limit.

Quick checks

  • Do you have False Pretense listed?
  • What’s the limit and deductible?
  • Do sales/F&I know the claim protocol?

4) Separate Garage Liability vs. Garagekeepers (Kentucky Auto Dealer Insurance Guide)

Year-end is the perfect time to re-educate your team: garage liability protects you if your operations cause an accident; garagekeepers protects customers’ vehicles in your care, custody, or control. One does not replace the other.

Quick checks

  • Road-test a customer vehicle and wreck it? Garagekeepers responds.
  • Employee causes an accident in a demo? Garage liability handles third-party damage; your demo’s damage is inventory coverage.

5) Reconcile values, floor plan, and lot limits

Inventory swells and shrinks. Make sure maximum any one lot and overall inventory limit match your real peaks. Align policy limits with floor plan statements and titles.

6) Review Employee Classification and Workers’ Compensation

If you added detailers, recon techs, or porters—or shifted duties—update class codes and payroll estimates. Avoid audit surprises from under- or over-reporting.

7) Confirm Property & Business Interruption basics

Walk the building(s): keys, safes, cameras, alarms, parts, tools, signage, and title storage. Verify business personal property and tenant improvements limits. Check business income/extra expense duration (90 days vs. 12 months).

8) Check Dealer Bond status and expirations

Ensure bond amount, effective dates, and obligee details are current and match your license renewal cycle. Keep a copy accessible for spot checks and renewals.

9) Update Additional Insureds, Locations, and Vendors

Added a satellite lot? Changed lenders or reinsurance partners? Hosting an off-site sale? Add locations, loss payees, and additional insureds now—before you need a certificate.

10) Clean up Certificates of Insurance and Contracts

Purge stale COIs and re-issue the important ones (floor plan lenders, landlords, event venues). Check contracts for insurance requirements that exceed your current limits.

11) Security & Loss-Control Tune-Up (KY Auto Dealer Insurance Fast Wins)

  • Keys: Locked system, after-hours protocol, log.
  • Lighting & cameras: Replace bulbs, test recording/retention; verify angles cover service lanes and fences.
  • Lot layout: Park nose-to-nose and keep gaps tight; move high-value units to visible spots.
  • Storm plan: Hail nets or relocation plan; assign staff roles and rehearse once.
  • Title handling: Dual control, nightly safe, monthly audit.

What’s Covered vs. Not Covered (at a glance)

  • Garage Liability: Injuries/property damage to others from your operations; not your own inventory damage.
  • Garagekeepers: Damage to customers’ vehicles in your custody; not third-party injury from your operations.
  • Dealer Blanket / Open Lot: Physical damage to your inventory (collision and, if written that way, comprehensive perils like wind/hail, theft, vandalism). Watch deductibles and hail aggregates.
  • False Pretense: Losses from trick or scheme (walk-offs, fraudulent titles). Often a separate sub-limit.

Two real-world scenarios I see every winter

  1. The hail-no surprise: Per-vehicle hail deductibles with no aggregate can create six-figure out-of-pocket after a storm. Choose an aggregate option that fits your cash flow.
  2. The demo confusion: Employee causes an accident in a dealer-owned unit. Garage liability covers the other driver; your unit’s damage falls under inventory coverage—not liability. Know this distinction in advance.

Why this Kentucky Auto Dealer insurance checklist matters

  • Audit-ready: Clean driver lists, payroll estimates, and floor plan alignment reduce audit headaches.
  • Claim-ready: You know which policy responds—fewer gaps, less downtime.
  • Cash-flow smart: Deductibles and aggregates match your tolerance before loss season.
  • Reputation-safe: Customers, lenders, and regulators see a professional operation.
